I visited Channel Islands National Park for the first time recently. It was a short 24 hour trip and I left definitely wanting to return and explore more of the islands. I boated to Santa Cruz Island, sea-kayaked sort-of, hiked and camped for the night. I loved the experience completely.
Santa Cruz Island Fox
Prior to my trip I hoped to catch a glimpse of the endangered Santa Cruz Island Fox. Well, I had more than ten sightings! In the Scorpion Bay area they are definitely not shy of humans, which is one of the reasons there are food lock boxes in the picnic areas and campgrounds. DO NOT FEED the wildlife.
These photos I took while a fox was sunbathing right off the trail in the lower campground at Scorpion Bay. Near dusk I saw a pup with its momma in the upper campground where I was staying. Santa Cruz Island Foxes are a distinct sub-species from the foxes on the other Channel Islands and the smallest of them all. Interesting.
