When there is a rainy day you have two choices: stay inside or go outside.
Rainy Day Hike
Go outside on a rainy day and play. Splash in puddles and listen to the noise. It’s okay to get a little wet.
Adults you have permission to play, too!
Climbing up muddy hills can be tricky. Persistence pays, though.
Who goes up must come down. Sometimes that means you need to slide.
Many trails are too muddy to hike when they are wet, but if you are lucky you will find an open trail.
A trail that surprisingly is not too muddy.
Take it.
Hike it.
Bountiful oak trees cover the trail. Walking within we are happy to be there. The low clouds and fog set an eerie tone.
Up we go and nearing the end kids happily put one foot in front of the other.
Hiking with friends is all the rage you know.
Got rain? Grab a friend and take a hike!
Tips for hiking in the rain:
- Lighter rain may be more fun than heavy rain. Many parks close the trails when the rain starts. Look for a trail near your house or in a national forest. Light rain may not soak the trails right away.
- Afraid of the mud or heavy rain in the forecast? Walk in your neighborhood and stay on the pavement.
- Kids, rain or shine, like snacks on the trail.
- Dress appropriately. Being wet and cold does not make for a fun time.
- Go for a hot coffee or cocoa after your hike.
How do you feel about hiking in the rain?

Yes! Love it! The rain makes me so happy…probably because we get so little of it here in Southern California, but luckily it’s been rainy for the last few weeks and we have definitely made use of the baby’s new rain boots
Hi Jennifer, thanks for your comment. Yes, we need the rain and it is kind of fun since we don’t get that much of it. Glad to hear you are getting out and putting those boots to good use.
I can relate! My puppy had surgery back in November. Luckily, we were not sick at the same time. Have you been to O’neill before? Depending on your kids ages, they have a nice playground and small nature center as well. (dogs are not allowed on trails there, except for Mesa Trail). The trail shots from this post were taken on the Mesa Trail near the Featherly Day use area. Have you been to Casper’s Wilderness Park?
Hi Amy, can the strollers go on dirt trails? Send me an email at tlehmanenator@gmail.com and I will give you some suggestions.
Way to not let the rain get you down this looks fun!
Well, we were couped up the week prior due to sickness and we could not wait for fair weather to hike. Just had to make it happen. Luckily, my friend took up to the perfect place. Thanks for your comment as always!
I agree with you, Traci – being outside on a rainy day is just lovely. People think I’m crazy but I actually also love walking along the beach on a wintry, rainy day too. You all look like you are having a great time in those pictures !

Hi Cherina! You’re not crazy at all. The beach in winter is the best here, too. No crowds, moody waters, and beautiful red sunsets make it worth while. We had a fun time thanks for visiting.
Walking and hiking in the rain is one of my favorite things. Of course, here in Seattle one’s got to love the rain
Hi Jayme! Yes, you better love the rain to live in Seattle.
It’s definitely more of a luxury for us down here since we don’t get it that often. Thanks for stopping by.
